Part 2 - The Sieve and the Sand
In this part, Montag tries to convince his wife to read books with him, that they aren't creations meant to destroy their society, but realizes that she is a lost cause and gives up. As he is mulling over what to do about his collection of books he remembers a day, the previous year, a day which he had thought nothing of, a day when he had met a man, a professor. The man's name was Faber, and he too was fascinated by books.
Montag sets out to find him, and when he does, he convinces Faber to explain to the importance of literature. As he leaves, Faber gives him an ear piece through which they can hear each other and what's going on around them. When Montag gets home, Mildred has friends over to watch a TV show. Something in Montag snaps when he hears them discussing politics, and runs to get a book. He then turns to a page, and starts reading the poem Dover Beach to them.
The next day, when Montag shows up at the fire station, Beatty tells him about a dream he had in which they battled; spewing quotes at each other. This part ends when Beatty and the firemen drive to a new house to burn. Montag's house.
